On Monday the Oscars were postponed two months—a once-unthinkable prospect. And the seismic disruption throughout Hollywood’s trophy-giving landscape is just beginning.
The Academy’s choice was born from uncertainty. Many states are beginning to reopen after three months of stay-at-home standstill, with production gradually resuming and theaters preparing to light up their screens again. But cases of the deadly virus are also spiking in several states, and the future is fraught with the possibility of more illness and lockdowns.
Honorary Oscars will still be presented this year, but the separate Governors Awards ceremony will not take place in the fall. Details on when that would happen will be determined later.that the organization worked with studios and distributors to determine the awards’ timeline. Physician and public health policy adviser, who separately advises the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, urged the Academy to push the event back as far as possible.
