The 2019 Women's World Cup starts this week. Here's what you need to know:

Megan Rapinoe #15 of the United States celebrates with Alex Morgan #13 after Morgan scored her 100th international goal, April 4, 2019, in Colorado. The eighth edition of the Women’s World Cup kicks off in Paris on Friday with host nation France playing South Korea in a group A match. The final will take place in Lyon on Sunday, July 7 and over the month of competition, nine cities will host 24 countries playing a total of 52 matches.

The competition has made giant strides since the first Women’s World Cup was held in 1991 in China. Twenty-eight years ago only 12 countries competed at the finals and each game only lasted 80 minutes. One hundred and forty-three countries entered the qualifying process. From April 2017 to December 2018 the number was whittled down to just 23 countries plus host nation, France.

UEFA is represented by 9 countries at France 2019; 5 are from Asia; 3 each from Africa, Concacaf and CONMEBOL; 1 from Oceania. In preparation for the group draw in December of last year, the 24 teams were placed in four pots of six. France, USA, England, Germany, Canada, and Australia were all assigned to pot 1.

At the official draw, the countries were drawn into six groups of four. The countries in each group will play each other once, with 3 points awarded for a win and one point for a draw. The top two teams in each group will automatically move to the round of 16 and will be joined by the 4 best third-place finishers over the six groups.
