Donald Trump with a Pride flag, October 2016.Donald Trump’s election in 2016 has been a political flashpoint because of the policies he’s enacted and the engagement that has arisen in response, including in LGBTQ activism and organizing.A lot of the issues that are getting more attention now, including violence against trans people, were not invented by Trump. Unless we enact more concrete systemic change, they'll be here long after Trump.
Both nationally and globally, there has been, alongside them, the rise of the far-right fascist regimes, [and] this obsession with gender ideology. This is connected to continued efforts to restrict access to abortion and reproductive health care, as well as entrench gender norms in a particular way.Because they are not carrying the five-foot-tall "God hates f*gs" placards, it can be easier to assume that they are, you know, quote-unquote, legitimate players.
. It ended up being called the Queer Liberation March. It was such a vibrant moment: 48,000 people came out and said, "Our pride is not ours anymore. It's too corporate. It doesn't shed a light on community, and it's not safe for our most marginalized people.”I think that, honestly, there has been, for a long time — over the past 10 years and beyond — a rejection by many community groups, by many activist groups of the corporate Pride.
