Sitting in seat 3, row 1, section 106 of Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium last Sunday was the teacher of one of the greatest leadership lessons I’ve witnessed in a while. At 12 years old, Ben Barker had so much impact in a viral video that he was given a chance to attend the AFC Championship game.
And the seconds after the OT touchdown also were captured on the same security video at the Barker home. As the Chiefs and their fans celebrated in the stadium, the Barker’s – that’s parents Cherise and Matt and sons Ben, Samuel, 14, and Jude, 6 – celebrated in their den by jumping up and down, drowning in enthusiasm, celebrating as their favorite team made the conference championship game for the fourth consecutive year.
Fast forward to the championship game, and the whole family got to attend a pre-game tailgate where other patrons wanted to pose for selfies with “the 13-second kid.” GEHA gave out swag bags, and for Ben, this included a signed #15 jersey and helmet. goal in overtime against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium on January 30, 2022 in Kansas City, Missouri. The game was almost a mirror-image of the previous week’s extraordinary contest, this time with the Bengals overcoming an 18-point deficit to take the lead in the fourth quarter. Once again, the Chiefs won the coin flip, but Bengals’ safety Vonn Bell flipped the script on the Chiefs and intercepted Mahomes, setting up the game-winning field goal.
