That sky-high I Bond interest rate is coming down to earth

, backed by the U.S. government, the safest investment around. In a few weeks, a little of the luster will fade.

Even at a lower interest rate, I Bonds are likely to offer a yield that is at least 2 percentage points higher than a 30-year U.S. Treasury bond and more than 40 times the average U.S. savings-account interest rate. There is an investment that is 100% backed by the U.S. government, never loses its value and is paying more than 7% interest a year. So, why haven’t most Americans heard of Series I Savings Bonds? Bipartisan legislation introduced in the Senate last month would raise the cap on purchases from the current $10,000 to $30,000 when CPI holds above 3.5% year-over-year for a period of six months or more.
