The veteran Alley actor has portrayed the master sleuth several times in Houston and will do it again in 'Sherlock Holmes and the Jersey Lily.'
Where: Alley Theatre, 520 Texas Ave.For Waite, the character of Holmes is calibrated differently every time. He likes what Cumberbatch did in the relatively recent BBC/PBS adaptation, but is not a fan of Basil Rathbone’s exceedingly humorless Holmes in the classic films of the 1930s and ‘40s. In “Jersey Lily,” he explains, the script opens with a production note that Forgette’s play is “emphatically a drama-comedy, not a comedy-drama.
The plot of “Jersey Lily,” written in 2009 and directed here by Brandon Weinbrenner, revolves around the actress Lillie Langtry, muse of celebrated Irish wit Oscar Wilde, and some sensitive letters between her and the Prince of Wales that have turned up stolen. Holmes has an epic fencing match with Professor Moriarty and at one point, as he often does, puts on a disguise.Meanwhile, Holmes takes it upon himself to teach Watson, played by Orlando Arriaga , how to think like a detective.
Waite sees a lot of Hamlet in Holmes, and a lot of himself. At one point he was one of the top athletes at his school while also studying pre-med sciences; Holmes is likewise both athletic and cerebral. Getting involved in theater proved to be a remedy for the social awkwardness that Holmes often struggles with, although of course the great detective would never confess the contents of heart on pain of death.
It’s that devotion to the truth that gives “Jersey Lily” the faintest political edge, Waite believes. The truth is not whatever someone says it is; it must be empirically verified. The steps Holmes takes to uncover the truth are the key to any well-executed Sherlock adventure: the audience not only must believe the detective but — however belatedly — be able to follow his logic.
