John Carver holding a phone up and a knife to Yulia's throat in Thanksgiving
While it's still unclear when it will get off the ground, Jalen Thomas Brooks has shared new insight into Thanksgiving 2. Inspired by Eli Roth's faux trailer from the Grindhouse duology, the 2023 slasher centered on the town of Plymouth, Massachussetts as it comes under brutal attack by a serial killer dressed as pilgrim John Carver, with the killings tied to a tragedy from the year before.
Garnering largely positive reviews from critics and a solid $46.6 million box office haul against its $15 million production budget, Thanksgiving 2 was greenlit within two weeks and was originally set for a 2025 release, but has seen numerous delays. Now, in an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns for his return in The Pitt season 2, Jalen Thomas Brooks was asked about his potential return for Thanksgiving 2. The star, who played Jessica's ex-boyfriend Bobby in the original film, confirmed that"everybody will be back" for the horror sequel, including his character. He also confirmed that, while he has not read it himself, the script is finished for the film, and that Roth has some big plans for the follow-up: Jalen Thomas Brooks: I've talked to Eli about it a little bit. He said it's completely different, a new, original take on everything. He wants to give the audience a reason to go back and see a sequel to a slasher. Bobby will be there, questions will be answered, especially with Jessica, with Ryan. It's really nice. It's a good book end, for sure. There's some cool stuff coming. Despite its initial early success and 2025 release window, progress has been slower going on Thanksgiving 2 than some expected. The three years since the first film has seen Roth offer a variety of updates for the horror sequel, namely that he and writer Jeff Rendell were penning the script with the intent to bring back Nell Verlaque as Jessica, Addison Rae as Gaby and Milo Manheim as Ryan, while the rest remained unclear. Roth also previously confirmed that the cast's busy schedules were the biggest hold-up for Thanksgiving 2 entering production. Rae previously joined the live-action/animated hybrid adventure movie Animal Friends and has stayed busy with her music, while Verlaque is co-leading MGM+'s American Classic and Manheim has been tapped to play Flynn for the live-action Tangled remake. Interestingly, Brooks' latest update is the first confirmation that Bobby is also returning for the sequel, which makes sense after Thanksgiving's ending. Having survived unmasking Patrick Dempsey's Sheriff Eric Newlon as the killer, the movie saw Jessica reunite with Manheim's Ryan, but still showed lingering looks between her and Bobby, leaving the door open for the former couple to further contemplate a reconciliation. Beyond Bobby's return, it is interesting that Brooks also refers to Thanksgiving 2 as being a"book end" for the franchise. Roth is not generally known for being a franchise filmmaker, apart from the Hostel films, which he is developing a TV reimagining for at Peacock led by Paul Giamatti. As such, he may have felt there's enough narrative room to build the upcoming sequel, and potentially close it from there. Related 10 Biggest Unanswered Questions That Thanksgiving 2 Needs To Answer The upcoming Thanksgiving 2 can answer a lot of lingering mysteries left behind by the ending of director Eli Roth's 2023 slasher Thanksgiving. Posts By Cathal Gunning However, there's also the possibility that Thanksgiving 2 will only be the end for Bobby and the rest of the surviving original characters, rather than the series as a whole. Other slasher titles have found ways to develop sequels without solely relying on returning characters, or by leaning into the iconography of its killer villain, which Roth could do if he gives some closure to the central cast, and shifts his focus to a different person donning the John Carver mask in a future film.
