Thousands throughout the world celebrated the 16th annual Record Store Day on Saturday, an event for vinyl record enthusiasts that was first conceived back in 2007 and launched a year later.
Aurora resident Steve Warrenfeltz, owner of Kiss the Sky record store in Batavia, shows off the new Taylor Swift vinyl album that was produced exclusively for the 16th annual Record Store Day held around the world on Saturday.
Each year, in honor of Record Store Day, a number of collectible, limited release records become available at independent stores including nearly 100 shops in Illinois.People gather outside Kiss the Sky record store in Batavia Saturday morning waiting for it to open at 8 a.m. in order to scoop up collectible vinyl records during the 16th annual Record Store Day.
According to the Recording Industry Association of America, vinyl outsold CDs in 2022, noting that “the last time vinyl records were this popular was in 1987.” Kurtz adds that another generation of fans is coming to carry the vinyl wave forward. Based on demographic feedback he has gotten from stores during previous Record Store Days, “the average of age of someone coming in is 28 years old.”Glen Ellyn residents Isabelle Kempf and her father Ryan take a selfie outside Batavia's Kiss the Sky record store before it opened Saturday for Record Store Day.
“Imagine if labels had been able to supply the demand that was there, that’s the biggest thing,” Martens said. “The demand has been about four times greater than what the supply was. Every day, I have to tell somebody I don’t have a copy of something. Imagine if those sales would have been counted. It would have been astronomical. The fact is they can’t make records as fast as they would sell.”
