When you don't go to see good or diverse non-tentpole movies in theaters, you're telling studios not to bother with producing good or diverse non-tentpole movies for theaters.
) multiplex fare, and you only see the sanitized musical biopic and the comic book superhero sequel , well, message received.
Movie studios are not charities, and they will absolutely pursue the production of good, original and/or diverse theatrical movies if those films make money in theaters. Disney has tripled-down on diversity and gender-parity partially because it’s smart business.
In a Netflix-and-Chill era, an indie arm like Fox 2000 was all-but-doomed. To the extent that Disney deserves our scorn for shuttering it , any company that purchased Fox would have likely done the same. When you make good theatrical movies and then nobody sees those movies in theaters, it’s only a matter of time before the inevitable occurs.
The only silver lining is that we may see more movies like what Fox 2000 used to make as streaming premieres via Disney+ and Hulu. Disney can potentially make more movies likewithout the burden of theatrical grosses determining whether a movie is successful. Like Netflix and Hulu, they can get credit for releasing an ambitious/challenging/diverse movie or TV show regardless of whether anyone watches it. This whole Disney/Fox deal is frankly terrible news for theatrical moviegoers .
