I shouldn’t even be talking about this. But here we are. First things first: Black people are not a monolith—it’s reductive and a gross generalization to think in such terms. And with that out of the way, let’s talk about Black Thanksgiving.
To the untrained eye, the blackness is in the people. But that’s not the entire story. The true essence is in the lens through which we discuss what has happened since we last came together.Again, I shouldn’t even be talking this s**t. I’ve already said too much. Let’s start from the beginning and see how this goes.
And then, a honk from the driveway, a sign that a certain aunt—who will remain nameless because collard greens giveth, collard greens taketh away—has arrived, with little intention of carrying the food inside by herself because she is equal parts Cleopatra, Patti LaBelle, Nefertiti, and Tina Knowles. In this era of Black Twitter , a once-guarded secret has come to the surface: the reality that black people talk a certain way when only around other black people. One of the unearthed facts about this is black people love making fun of white people, love griping about white people, love plotting an overthrow of America from white people as a form of reparations.
To be fair, 2008 may have been the greatest Thanksgiving in Black History since 1865. This was the First Black President Thanksgiving. Talk of the Obamas was clearly the main event, only weeks after the election, with my uncle alerting the family that Barack was not “a regular Negro.” Obama had been a staple in our yearly conversations since his 2004 DNC speech, alongside Mike Vick and T.I.
