PETALING JAYA: Theerathon Bunmathan’s status as the best in the AFF Mitsubishi Cup was well deserved and his performances in the tournament will be remembered for a long time.
The 32-year-old led Thailand to their seventh AFF title after beating Vietnam 1-0 in the second leg final at the Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani on Monday for a 3-2 aggregate win.
With that match-winning goal, it was not a surprise to see him win the man-of-the-match award and was also named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. “At that moment, I ran into a favourable position. I knew there would be few opportunities this game, so I had to shoot right out of the box.”A left wingback by trade under coach Alexandre Polking, Theerathon has also been used as a midfielder to set the tempo and get the team moving with his passes and runs.
