Transport for London has announced a £4,000,000 plan to individually name all six of the London Overground lines to make wayfinding less of a chore. Depending who you ask, this is either genius, or a huge waste of money.

Nowadays, navigating the Overground can be a bit of a challenge, even for veteran London commuters.

While not quite as infamous as the labyrinth that is Bank or the sweltering Central Line, five of the six Overground lines overlap at Zone 2 station interchanges. The six routes connect Euston to Watford Junction; Stratford to Richmond/Clapham Junction; Liverpool Street to Enfield Town or Cheshunt or Chingford; Highbury & Islington or Dalston Junction to New Cross, West Croydon, Crystal Palace or Clapham Junction; Gospel Oak to Barking Riverside and Romford to Upminster.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, had renaming the Overground lines as one of his re-election pledges No details were provided in the TfL’s budget for 2023-24 for the new names, whether each would have a new colour, or when the changes would be rolled out. Usually, it’s up to TfL and City Hall to come up with tube line names and may consult with local authorities and advocacy group London TravelWatch.

This means it’s unlikely the public will have much of a say in what the six routes should be renamed to – so maybe don’t
