Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the “hype” and pressure in the United States for a prisoner exchange involving Griner were not helping her chances of release. Ryabkov spoke to journalists as the court convened Thursday in the Moscow suburb of Khimki. The prosecution said the cartridges contained a “significant amount” of cannabis oil, although the amount involved is 0.702 grams , according to investigators.
Griner was arrested during severe tension between Washington and Moscow, which has worsened with Russia’s war on Ukraine. In January, the U.S. Embassy in Moscow issued an alert warning Americans against any travel to Russia because of the severe downturn as diplomatic efforts to avert the war failed.
