Texas won 49-0. AUSTIN — Iowa State running back Breece Hall delivered a couple of nasty gut punches to Texas two years ago.
“Coach Campbell has done a great job at Iowa State, as we all know,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “We’ve got our work cut out for us.” As expected, the offense has suffered a significant drop-off with quarterback Brock Purdy, tight end Charlie Kolar and Hall departing for the NFL. But the defense is still posting elite numbers, topping the Big 12 in scoring defense, run defense and pass defense.
So it would make sense for Texas defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski to call more blitzes than usual this week and let fifth-year tackles Keondre Coburn and Moro Ojomo draw attention to the interior to create opportunities for the edge rushers and blitzers.Senior end Will McDonald IV has totaled 25½ sacks and 32 tackles for loss over his past 31 games. He picked up 2½ of those sacks in Iowa State’s 30-7 win over Texas last year.
