Texas trans kids need our support against dangerous law | Opinion

I’ve been passionate about speaking out against SB 14 these past few months, but I and many others were not been given the respect we deserve. I regularly exercise my rights to participate in statehouse rallies and activities, and I’m familiar with the rules and regulations. But in early May,

I was forcibly removed from the Capitol and banned from returning for a full year, simply for hanging a flag in the rotunda that said “Let Trans Kids Grow Up.” Legislators are going to great lengths to intimidate me and other members of marginalized communities from speaking up in order to stoke fear and distort the truth about the legislation they are proposing. This suppression is nothing less than unjust and anti-democratic. I deserve to have my voice heard just like any other Texan invested in the policies shaping our lives.

I have a multitude of identities, I am a first-generation Mexican American, I am an organizer, I am a woman, I am trans, but even more than that, I am American. I want what every Texan and every American wants: to be able to take care of myself and my loved ones. That shouldn’t be a heavy ask of our leaders who are elected to represent us, their constituents. I’m especially concerned about the young people who feel that the government doesn’t have their back.
