No. 23 Texas tops Baylor, keeps Big 12 championship game hopes alive

AUSTIN — Friday’s regular-season finale was a perfect encapsulation of the type of year it’s been for Texas.
Robinson and senior running back Roschon Johnson ran with fury down the stretch. Junior linebacker Jaylan Ford snatched his fourth interception of the year at a pivotal moment. And a weary defense found an extra gear thanks to a prideful group of veterans showing out on Senior Day. Sarkisian wasn’t thrilled when Texas “spotted” Baylor a 9-0 lead early. The response, though, was heartening.
The team traded field goals in the second quarter. But Baylor forced a late three-and-out thanks to two big sacks on Ewers and quarterback Blake Shapen linked up with tight end Ben Sims for a go-ahead 14-yard touchdown just before halftime. Then came Ewers’ second critical mistake. Slow to recognize an incoming blindside blitz, he fled left and tried to fire a pass, but safety Al Walcott batted the ball from his hand and edge defender Gabe Hall scooped it for a 16-yard touchdown return. After a successful two-point conversion, Baylor led 27-24 with 13:30 remaining.
Robinson finished with 179 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. Johnson tallied 77 yards and two scores on 13 carries, 11 of which came in the second half.As for the conspiracy theorists, the same exact officiating crew that didn’t flag Oklahoma State once while penalizing Texas 14 times in the Longhorns’ 41-34 loss back on Oct. 22 was in charge of Friday’s game. Texas was flagged five times Friday, while the Bears' lone penalty — a delay of game — occurred with about eight minutes to go.
