Hospitals will continue to track COVID admissions, but the CDC may report those numbers less frequently, the CDC says.

COVID is in the midst of a lull. The state dashboard reflects hospitalizations up to last Tuesday, when it reported 900 hospitalizations, down from a recent high of 3,445 on Jan. 3. Infectious disease experts and public health officials in Houston say it’s an appropriate time to end the emergency, but some are also concerned about losing certain data points, such as the positivity rate, that helped them convey the urgency of the situation.

“There was never one magic number that you could look at and say, ‘Aha, that’s what’s going on,’” said Dr. Peter Hotez, co-director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. “You’d have to look at trends and be able to integrate all that information in order to make kind of a cogent story around it.
