Texas third-string QB Charles Wright could fulfill dreams, start vs. UTSA
Charles Wright has progressed in his time at Texas and could be called upon Saturday against UTSA due to injuries to Quinn Ewers and Hudson Card.AUSTIN — Mike Rosenthal doesn’t know if there’s one definitive Charles Wright story. But the former Austin High coach does have a compelling tale to share with anyone who wants to take measure of the third-string quarterback who’s been thrust into the spotlight at Texas.
“He had a great first half,” Rosenthal recalled. “And then second half, he just starts cramping and locking up. But he won’t come out of the game. He just wanted to battle through it. And we ended up losing that game, but just the toughness of what he went through that week. There was never a question. I never asked him ‘Hey, man, are you gonna play?’ It was just understood.”
But with starter Quinn Ewers out and backup Hudson Card on the mend, Wright is the next man up. And Sarkisian believes he’s ready for the moment against UTSA , another underdog no one should sleep on. Wright committed to Iowa State in February 2020, a few months after his junior season. It was an ideal philosophical fit with coach Matt Campbell’s program, which emphasized all the traits Wright exuded.
But that first spring at Texas — working behind Card, Casey Thompson and even walk-on Ben Ballard — was challenging for Wright.
