Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire runs on to the field during the first half of an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023, in Morgantown, W.Va., the Red Raider roster continues to be overhauled with the work of general manager James Blanchard and his recruiting staff. McGuire and Co. are looking to take the next step after a strong start in 2022 and 2023.

The roster turnover under McGuire is almost complete, with just 16 players and five starters remaining from the 2022 roster that McGuire inherited from the previous staff, making 2024 a key season for the Red Raiders. While those five starters are key, most notably running back Tahj Brooks and quarterback Behren Morton, the majority of the roster is built with players who have been brought in by the current coaching staff.“We feel really good...

To pair with Brooks and Morton, the Red Raiders are revamped on the offensive side of the football. Texas Tech brought in a bevy of transfers at wide receiver, tight end and on the offensive line to help create a more explosive offense under coordinator Zach Kittley. “At the end of the day to do that, for us to have played meaningful games in November, our offensive skill that we feel like we have made a huge upgrade, our offensive skill has got to be who they are supposed to be,” McGuire said. “Josh Kelly has to be Josh Kelly. Caleb Douglas has to be a home run hitter. Coy Eakin’s gotta continue to do what he does..

On the defensive side of the football, McGuire continued to share his excitement for the Red Raiders heading into his third season at the helm, sharing beliefs that this could be the deepest unit, especially on the defensive line, to this point under his reign.“But defensively, it’s good to have as many guys we have to play. I mean, you probably heard me say this, but our first year Boog and Tony played 700-plus snaps,” McGuire said.
