Texas Tech Red Raiders team walks onto the field to take on Mississippi Rebels in the TAxAct Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2022 in Houston.Additionally, Ole Miss turned the ball over five times.
Jaxson Dart threw for 361 yards and two scores, but he was intercepted three times. “We had to take advantage of our opportunities and the defense put us in great spots,” said the 23-year-old Shough, who is 5-0 this season as a starter and has been the winning quarterback in each of the past four games. “They gave us great field position all game, and the O-Line played their hearts out.” In never trailing, Texas Tech outscored Ole Miss 16-0 in a decisive second quarter, building a 26-7 halftime advantage. The Red Raiders put the game away on Loic Fouonji’s 44-yard kickoff return for touchdown on an on-side kick with 3:03 remaining in the game. Both teams came into the game with few opt outs. A number of players that have announced intentions to enter the transfer portal played for their respective team. “I don't believe that bowl's don't matter,” McGuire said. “You play a long season and you worked your tail off to become bowl eligible. This is a reward for the players. Our guys had a blast this week. Texas Bowl was incredible, hospitality has been incredible.” Ole Miss picked up late yardage to out gain Tech 558-484. The Red Raiders, who committed three turnovers, had a balance offense, rushing for 242 yards, passing for 242 yards. Both teams wanted to end their season strong. Ole Miss had its leading tackler on the season, linebacker Troy Brown, disqualified in the early stages of the blowout for targeting Shough. Losing Brown was a huge blow, but nothing was more frustrating for Ole Miss than its inability to convert late downs. The Rebels’ drives bogged down on third- and fourth-down plays. Ole Miss’ first two offensive drives ended in turnovers on downs. “Really glaring at fourth downs and turnovers,” Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said. “This would have been a great game to win versus a good team and go out for these guys that were playing their last game.” Each team punted only once, factoring in the coaches being aggressive in play calling. The game was expected to be high scoring. Tech came in averaging 33.5 points, Ole Miss 34.1. “They've got a great offense,” Kiffin said. “Going in, you are going to have to steal some possessions and take risks. It was discouraging because they had a lot of similar fourth downs and did a really good job with good scheme runs to scheme us up.” The Red Raiders were the superior team across the board. Its defense contained the Rebels’ vaunted running game, and Trey Wolff was successful on 3-of-4 field goal attempts. Ole Miss was averaging 261.6 rushing yards. It managed 197 on 43 carries against Texas Tech, which dominated the line of scrimmage.
