The vacancy was created Wednesday night, when Mark Adams stepped down three days afterfor making what was called “an inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive comment.”
“My lifelong goal was to help and be a positive influence on my players, and to be a part of the Texas Tech men's basketball team,” Adams said in a statement. “However, both the University and I believe this incident has become a distraction for the Texas Tech men's basketball team and the University, which I care about so deeply.”
In a meeting with an unidentified player, Adams “was encouraging the student-athlete to be more receptive to coaching and referenced Bible verses about workers, teachers, parents, and slaves serving their masters,” Tech said when announcing the coach's suspension. The announcement of Adams' resignation stated that athletic director Kirby Hocutt determined “the racially insensitive comment was unintentional and an isolated incident.” The school also said Adams “immediately apologized to the team,” buthe didn’t apologize, but addressed the team to explain the situation.
Adams, 66, coached two seasons at Texas Tech, replacing Chris Beard, who left for Texas. Coincidentally, Texas also has a vacancy after Beard was fired earlier this year following his arrest on domestic violence charges that have since been dropped.
