A new study reveals that while Texas boasts one of the most diverse teacher workforces in the US, it still falls short of accurately representing its student population, particularly students of color.
Texas has one of the most diverse teacher workforces in the United States, but still falls short of representing students of color, according to a new study. The National Council on Teacher Quality analyzed state and national trends for demographic groups in a recent report titled, “A New Roadmap for Strengthening Teacher Diversity.
” The report revealed that the number of teachers of color has grown over the past decade, but as more people of color earn college degrees, “their representation in the teacher workforce is not keeping pace.” It’s a new trend, the study says. Until recently, the teacher workforce was slightly more diverse than the overall population of working-age adults. Texas led the country in teacher diversity in 2022, with more than 45% of teachers being people of color compared to the national average of 23%. That number was still far from reflective of the state's students — 73.5% of whom are people of color, the report notes. Still, the gap has shrunk 2% since 2014. Similarly, 43% of Texas teachers came from historically disadvantaged groups, which includes American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic and Islander/Pacific Native. The organization calculated the number of people from historically disadvantaged groups using a five-year rolling average. It says Texas had 26 percentage points fewer teachers from historically disadvantaged groups than students. “Teachers of color have a positive impact on all students — especially students of color — yet our teacher workforce continues to lack racial diversity,” said NCTQ President Dr. Heather Peske in a news release. “Addressing this issue begins with better data.” Created with federal employment and education demographic data, NCTQ's new Teacher Diversity Dashboard showed that nearly 30% of Texas teachers in 2022 were Hispanic, compared to 53% of students. On the other hand, 12% of teachers and 13% of students were Blac
