After years of jumping from job to job, Texas State coach G.J. Kinne finally found a place to call home and a program to build into a long-term winner.

G.J. Kinne spent the past seven years hopscotching from job to job, an ambitious young coach scaling a serpentine career ladder. SMU in 2017. Arkansas the following year. The Philadelphia Eagles , Hawaii , Central Florida , Incarnate Word and Texas State over the next five. All that roving mirrored Kinne ’s rootless days in pro football. Seven teams in four different leagues across a five-year span. Now, the Bobcats’ 35-year-old head coach is adjusting to something new — stability.

Kinne signs contract extension with Texas State, pledges to continue to build program Texas State was still five days away from steamrolling the Owls last December when Kinne signed a restructured contract that bumped up his annual base salary from $800,000 to $1 million through 2028. That show of long-term support, at last, allowed the nomadic Kinnes to start looking for a permanent address.
