TSU, cheering a shot against Arizona State earlier this season, hasn't had as much to celebrate in first part of SWAC season.It seems strange seeing Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M occupying a share of eighth place in the SWAC men’s basketball standings.
“It’s big because being back-to-back champs we have a chip on our shoulder every game, and them being our cross-town rival, it is one of our biggest games,” said TSU’s Karl Nicholas, the top rebounder in the SWAC and a Pearland Dawson product. “It’s an exciting weekend that we all look forward to, and it’s a great day for the city of Houston,” TSU men’s coach Johnny Jones said. “The atmosphere is unbelievable, it’s one of the best atmospheres in college basketball. You talk about Texas Southern and Prairie View because of proximity and how close our fan base is.
“But this game takes on a life of its own because it’s a big local rivalry that everybody gets excited about.”Injuries have also affected the Panthers, a solid defensive team that struggles scoring. Over the past two months three different PV players have broken a hand during a game. Point guard Trajan Wesley is out with a concussion.
