Texas Southern University selects Carl B. Goodman as new provost, senior VP of academic affairs
Jon Shapley, Houston Chronicle / Staff photographerThe Texas Southern University's Board of Regents has hired pharmacologist Carl B. Goodman to serve as its next provost and senior vice president of academic affairs.
He will begin on July 1, taking one of the most prominent positions at the historically Black university as it eyes advancements in research and works toward higher graduation rates.Goodman, who earned the appointment during a meeting last Thursday, comes from Bowie State University – a public, historically Black university in Maryland – where he has served as provost and vice president of academic affairs since June 2020.
He has held administrative roles since 2014, when he became assistant dean for research and graduate studies at Florida A&M University. He also served there as associate provost for academic affairs and student services, a division director for basic pharmaceutical sciences, and associate provost for undergraduate education and student services.
TSU held a national search to fill the provost position after Kendall Harris left in mid-2021. Education professor Lillian B. Poats served as acting provost until social work professor Needha Boutte-Queen took over in January.
