The Texas Southern Lady Tigers continued their dominance in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) with an 80-69 victory over the Prairie View A&M Panthers. Jaida Belton led the Tigers with a double-double, while Alaysia Fantroy shined defensively. Coach Vernette Skeete emphasized the team's focus on development and preparation for the upcoming SWAC Tournament.
The Texas Southern Lady Tigers (9-10, 8-0 SWAC ) continued their conference dominance with an 80-69 victory over their crosstown rivals, the Prairie View A&M Panthers (5-13, 2-7 SWAC ). The game, broadcasted by legendary broadcaster Charlie Neal and rising star Nia Symone for HBCU GO, entertained over 3,000 spectators at H&PE Arena on Saturday, February 1. Texas Southern 's Jaida Belton led the charge with a double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Coach Vernette Skeete praised Belton's performance, highlighting her exceptional basketball IQ and understanding of the court. Alaysia Fantroy, the spark plug for the Tigers, ignited several runs with her stellar defense. Fantroy, last week's SWAC Player of the Week, played a game-high 37 minutes, contributing 10 points, seven rebounds, and five steals. Coach Skeete acknowledged that while the team hasn't yet put together a perfect 40-minute performance in the SWAC, their eighth consecutive conference win demonstrated their resilience. Despite facing double-digit leads shrinking twice, Texas Southern turned up the defensive pressure, ultimately securing their victory. The coach emphasized the team's ongoing development, striving for peak performance throughout the season. Point guard Aaliyah Henderson, despite not always having flashy stats, plays a crucial role in controlling the ball distribution and movement of Coach Skeete's 'FLUX' offense. Her seven points, three assists, and two steals, while seemingly average, are vital to the team's 8-game winning streak. Texas Southern's 'FLUX' offense was on fire from the start, shooting 61.11% from the floor in the first quarter. They also converted two of their four three-point attempts and all their free throws in that period. Prairie View struggled to keep up, shooting only 42.9% from the floor and missing all three of their three-point attempts in the first quarter. The Lady Panthers finished the game with a 43.9% field-goal percentage, 33.3% from three-point range, and 66.7% from the free-throw line. Texas Southern dominated the paint, scoring 56 points compared to Prairie View's 32. The depth of the Tigers' bench proved to be a significant factor, contributing 56 bench points. Jaida Belton's 21 points in 19 minutes, Daeja Holmes' 5 points in 21 minutes, and Tianna Mathis' 4 points in 13 minutes showcased the team's strength in reserve players. Coach Skeete remained focused on the bigger picture, emphasizing that the SWAC Tournament in Atlanta is the ultimate goal. While the current winning streak is positive, the team aims to continue developing and fine-tuning their strategies for a successful postseason run.
