AUSTIN — Texas on Sunday received some long-awaited good news from veteran big man Dylan Disu in the form of a snappy return announcement. The 6-foot-9 senior forward from Pflugerville had one year of eligibility to utilize due to the NCAA’s COVID-19 pandemic waiver. How did Dylan Disu develop his feathery floater? By lying on his back and shooting at air...for hours and hours
Disu’s return is a significant development for Texas and head coach Rodney Terry, who won the full-time role after leading the Longhorns to 22 wins and their first Elite Eight appearance in 15 years following the midseason firing of Chris Beard. He was, and remains, the tallest and longest player on the Longhorns’ roster. Disu provided the interior rim protection and rebounding Texas sorely needed for much of last season before transforming into a scoring hub down the stretch.
Disu averaged 7.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 0.5 steals per game in 30 regular-season starts. Over his first five postseason games in the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments, Disu's averages surged to 17.8 points , 9.0 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 0.8 blocks. He was named the most outstanding player of the Big 12 tournament.
But Disu’s dominant run in the NCAA tournament was cut short due to a left foot bone bruise he suffered while pouring in 28 points in a 71-66 win over 10th-seeded Penn State in the second round. He played just two minutes in Texas’ 83-71 win over third-seeded Xavier in the Sweet Sixteen and was held out of its 88-81 loss to fifth-seeded Miami in the Elite Eight.
