Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton waves to the crowd during a rally featuring former President Donald Trump on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022, in Robstown, Texas. The Texas Senate voted late Wednesday to bar state Sen. Angela Paxton from deciding the political fate of her husband, Ken Paxton, in his upcoming impeachment trial.

The chamber approved the rules on a 25-3 vote, with Angela Paxton among the trio of opposition votes. Her chief of staff did not immediately respond to a request for comment, though last week in a statement she appeared ready to vote in the trial “because my constituents deserve it.” Senators were unanimous in ordering Ken Paxton to appear before them in person. Paxton’s attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment.“I’ve never been more proud of the members of this floor and how you came together on this set of rules and how seriously you’re taking your responsibilities,” Patrick said, adding that Texans could count on the Senate to hold “a fair and just trial.

The charge is among 20 impeachment articles that accuse Paxton of accepting bribes and abusing the power of his office to help a friend and campaign donor. Paxton was impeached at the end of May by the Texas House over those allegations, as well as others dating back to a nearly eight-year-old pending felony securities fraud case against him.
