Next school year Texas could require public school classrooms to display the Ten Commandments. The Texas House passed Senate Bill 10 Sunday. They added a key ame

The Texas House passed Senate Bill 10 Son unday. They added a key amendment granting legal fees to a school district if any lawsuit emerges from the policy. Mara Nathan is Senior Rabbi at Temple Beth-El.

She feels public schools should be a place that’s neutral. “The Ten Commandments are important to us as Jewish people, but actually our Ten Commandments are organized a little differently than the Christian Ten Commandments,” Nathan said. “Of course, there are other faiths where that’s not part of their faith. It feels very exclusionary.” The Bill requires every classroom to display a poster with the Ten Commandments that is at least 16 by 20 inches. No other similar posters may be displayed. Levi Feidler with the Texas Freedom Network says Senate Bill 10 violates the freedoms of parents. “They don’t have a voice in whether the Ten Commandments are shown to their children, or even what version of the Ten Commandments,” Feidler said. “The version in the Bill isn’t found in any version of the Bible. So, it’s preventing them from educating children the way they would want to about religion.” Mark Pfeiffer of Reach Teach Love International and a former Islamic studies professor says displaying the Ten Commandments in classrooms is not pushing a particular religion. “I think it’s important to remember that the Ten Commandments are universally recognized concepts,” Pfeiffer said. “So, they are the kind of things that every culture around the world teaches their kids. Don’t steal. Don’t lie. Don’t envy. Don’t commit adultery. It’s not as though these commandments are just for Jewish or just Christians.” The Bill now heads back to the Senate for approval. If it does, Governor Abbott is poised to sign it.
