Texas Longhorns sophomore running back Quintrevion Wisner achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 1,000 rushing yards in a season. This accomplishment is notable considering his unexpected rise to the starting role due to injuries to other running backs. While Wisner's performance is commendable, the Longhorns face a tough challenge against the nation's top defense in their upcoming bowl game.
Texas’ leading rusher just eclipsed 1, 000 yards on the year, but his team needs another big performance against the nation’s No. 1 defense. Texas Longhorns running back Quintrevion Wisner (26) races down the sideline for a big second quarter run against the Arizona State Sun Devils defense in a CFP quarterfinal game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, January 1, 2024.
and Earl Campbell are a few Longhorn greats on that list that sophomore running back Quintrevion Wisner joined during Texas’ last game against Arizona State. But unlike the existing list that includes a couple of Doak Walker winners, an NFL MVP and one of the rising stars in the league today, Wisner didn’t enter his 1,000-yard season with expectations to cross that threshold. Wisner’s emergence as the team’s leading rusher has been a pleasant surprise. After a freshman season where he primarily played on special teams, Wisner has had to step into a much larger role amid injuries to CJ Baxter and Jaydon Blue. “I think it’s significant for him because he had to take on a role that maybe in the beginning of the year, nobody expected him to take on,” Texas offensive coordinator Kyle Flood said Wednesday night at a press conference at the Gaylord Texas ahead of the Cotton Bowl. “Tre has really emerged, so I’m really proud of him, not for the 1,000 yards but really more for being ready to step up when we needed him as a football team.”Texas returned Baxter and Blue, the second- and third-leading rushers from last year’s roster. Behind Jonathan Brooks, they combined for more than 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns. But knee surgery in August ended Baxter’s season before it began, and Blue dealt with both minor injuries and fumbling issues throughout the year
