The rules that went into effect ban smokable hemp-derived THC products. In September, Gov. Greg Abbott directed the Texas Department of State Health Services to“Unfortunately, it looks like it could be a shutdown for us,” said Estella Castro, owner of Austinite Cannabis Co.“It constantly feels like we’re under attack,” Sterling said. He said customers stocked up ahead of the rules taking effect. “You look at other states, and there are 29 other states that actually legalized cannabis, and we’re here attacking hemp,” Sterling said.Texas Department of State Health Services , those fees used to be $258 per year. Now, they are $10,000 — a cost business owners say could potentially shut down some Austin businesses.“Now, that company is moving locations to another state because they cannot sustain here; they just can’t without flower or pre-rolls,” she said. Texas Department of State Health Services records show 93 businesses in Austin sell hemp-derived THC products. CBS Austin reached out to the agency for comment, but has yet to hear back.“I think we are going to see a lot of accidents with maybe even possible overdoses or things.
