Texas' Pete Hansen, left, and Texas Silas Ardoin celebrate after winning an NCAA college super regional baseball game on Monday, June 13, 2022, in Greenville, N.C. Unfazed by a pair of lengthy weather delays in Greenville, N.C., No. 9 national seed Texas defeated No. 8 East Carolina 11-1 at Clark-LeClair Stadium Sunday night in Game 3 of their NCAA Tournament super regional series to advance to the men’s College World Series.
Sunday’s elimination game, originally scheduled for 4 p.m., began just over an hour late due to lightning delays and was placed back into another weather delay in the top of the first inning as storms rolled through the area. The second pause lasted exactly five hours and 15 minutes. When the game resumed, Texas catcher Silas Ardoin was in the batter’s box with Messinger on first base and one out and freshman Trey Yesavage was the Pirates’ current pitcher after replacing ineffective starter Danny Beal, who allowed two hits and four runs without recording an out. Yesavage worked out of the inning to the ardent applause of the fans who waited out the weather and returned to the stadium.
That seemed to give ECU some life, but Texas put an end to the Pirates’ fun by batting around in a five-run second inning that included five hits, two wild pitches and two pitching changes. Left fielder Eric Kennedy put Texas up 5-1 with an RBI single, second baseman Murphy Stehly drove in two with a double to deep center field and designated hitter Austin Todd added another run with a sacrifice fly before Messinger scored Stehly with an outfield single.
