Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s impeachment trial this week has divided Republicans in the GOP-controlled state. Paxton’s state Senate trial is set to start at 9 a.m. CT on Tuesday. The state House of Representatives voted in May to impeach and suspend Paxton for allegedly accepting bribes, pressuring state officials to help a campaign donor, and going to great lengths to keep his donor ties and his extramarital affair from the public eye.

Paxton, the third official in Texas’ 200-year history to be impeached, has consistently denied wrongdoing. A successful conviction vote would require all 12 Senate Democrats and at least half of the 18 voting Republicans. In a recent, 47% of Texans said Paxton’s actions justified permanently removing him from office; 18% said removal was not justified, and 35% didn’t know or had no opinion. Texas Republicans were split, with 24% favoring removal and 32% opposed.
