In 2023, the trio have traded barbs on social media over property tax cuts, education spending and the impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton. The fallout fromonly further inflamed relations among the leadership as well as rank and file. The attorney general has gone further, not only accusing Phelan of orchestrating the impeachment investigation for political gain but alleging, based on live-stream footage from the House floor of Phelan slurring his words, that he presided while inebriated. Paxton’s backers have dubbed him “Drunk Dade.”

During a recent virtual town hall with religious leaders, Abbott asked voters to contact lawmakers in their districts and press for “educational freedom.”

Phelan appointed Democrats to lead eight of 34 committees at the start of the regular 2023 legislative session, down from 13 the previous session.
