School safety is one of Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan's priorities this session.
PUBLISHED 2:14 PM CST Jan. 12, 2023AUSTIN, Texas — It’s been more than six months since the tragic shooting in Uvalde, where 19 students and two teachers were killed. Since then, Texas lawmakers have looked into potential solutions, like gun legislation, hardening schools, and increasing mental health resources in the state. Now, state leaders say school safety will be a key issue in this legislative session.
Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan Tuesday ran through a list of priorities, including school safety. He said it’s time for lawmakers to have a “tough conversation.” The Senate Special Committee to Protect All Texans reviewed what went wrong in Uvalde and released several policy recommendations. It mentioned only one gun restriction in the report. It would create a state penalty for straw purchases, when someone buys a gun who’s not allowed to own one.
“I think that once we have those numbers, that more will come on. But it really is that one-to-one conversation. They have to see what I’ve seen. They have to see children who have been mutilated by this weapon. I’ve seen children stacked in piles in a classroom. I’ve seen another pile of kids shielded by their teacher, all of them dead. I’ve seen a little girl with a face shot off. We have to do something about this.
