But Democrats in the narrowly divided House – stung by McCarthy’s capitulations to his right flank on impeachment and spending – gave the speaker no support, siding with Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and his small band of GOP rebels.McCarthy allies tried to table Gaetz’s motion to vacate, a sort of no confidence motion that forces a snap vote on whether the speaker gets to keep his job.
A small group of conservatives were willing to go over that cliff, helping tank a stopgap GOP measure intended to unify the conference with changes in border policy and massive spending cuts.“I disagree with the tactical play call. I do not believe that you pull the coach at the beginning of the fourth quarter,” tweeted Rep. Chip Roy, R-Austin, who has tangled repeatedly with McCarthy but also played a go-between role with the agitators.
