Officials with the Texas Department of State Health Services announced the first locally acquired case of dengue virus in 2024.

Dengue, a tropical illness caused by a virus, is spread by Aedes mosquitos, a type of warm weather insect that is expanding its geographic reach because of climate change, experts say.
Residents are asked to take precautions to protect against mosquito bites in Texas and while traveling internationally to countries in theabout the increased risk of dengue virus infections based on the rising number of global cases and higher-than-expected cases among U.S. travelers.Dengue virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes and about 25% of infected individuals become symptomatic.Most people recover completely within two weeks.
Eliminate standing water: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Regularly empty or treat containers that collect water, such as birdbaths, flowerpots, and gutters.
