Cameron County Public Health officials on Thursday said they have detected two locally acquired cases of West Nile virus and a locally acquired case of dengue. The Texas Department of State Health Services then announced on Monday that the dengue case was not only the first locally acquired case in Cameron County, but the first locally acquired case in the entire state this year..
Both West Nile and dengue are transmitted through mosquito bites. After an eight- to ten-day incubation period inside a mosquito that has bitten a person with the virus in their blood, the viruses can be transmitted. They cannot spread from person to person.
