A Texas resident was infected with malaria, the first locally acquired case of the disease in the state in 30 years, health officials announced.

Some 2,000 people in the U.S., including 120 in Texas, are diagnosed with malaria each year, but those cases are linked to travel outside the country. Neither the Texas nor Florida patients had traveled abroad, health officials said.

The last locally transmitted case in Texas occurred in 1994. The last confirmed case in the U.S. happened in 2003, when eight people became infected in Palm Beach County, Florida, the CDC said.Worldwide, more than 240 million cases of malaria are reported each year, with 95% coming from countries in Africa, the agency said.

Malaria is not spread from person to person, according to the CDC. Only infected mosquitoes transmit the disease. Malaria causes flu-like symptoms, including fever, shaking chills, sweats, headache, body aches, nausea and vomiting, with symptoms typically starting seven to 30 days after infection, the health department said. Without treatment, malaria can cause severe complications and death. Effective treatments are available at hospitals and other health care providers.
