The University of Texas System Board of Regents convened this week to discuss the demolition of the Erwin Center, Texas’ upcoming move to the SEC and a new contract for men’s head basketball coach Rodney Terry.

The Frank Erwin Center will be demolished by October 2024. The arena opened in 1977 and played host to Texas basketball along with thousands of concerts and events.AUSTIN – The University of Texas System Board of Regents convened this week to discuss and consider action on a number of agenda items, including the demolition of the Erwin Center and Cooley Pavilion, Texas’ upcoming move to the SEC and a new contract for men’s head basketball coach Rodney Terry.

The Texas men’s program played its final game at “The Drum” on March 5, 2022, falling to No. 6 Kansas 70-63. But the women’s program sunset the old circular concrete behemoth in style, beating Utah 78-56 in the second round of the NCAA tournament on March 20, 2022. In February, Texas and Oklahoma reached an exit agreement with the Big 12 and its broadcast partners to join the SEC in July 2024, one year earlier than the end date of the league’s grant media rights with Fox and ESPN.
