According to the FBI’s 2022 Elder Fraud Report, Texas ranks number 3 in the nation on victims over the age of 60 being scammed. We spoke to an elderly couple who made a bad decision and lost their life savings.
SAN ANTONIO - “Made us feel like they were doing the right thing and they were going to take care of us,” said scam victim Dennis Shockey. Dennis and his wife Joy Shockey were scammed out of nearly $180,000 and it all started with a pop up on his computer.But, it wasn’t blocked, it was a scammer preying on Shockey. The scammer got him to call a number and tricked him into moving their life savings into the scammer’s accounts. The scammers aim to gain the victim’s trust. victims over 60 are pressured to access such things like their retirement accounts or equity of their home and invest as much money as possible into the fraudulent scheme. “Across the nation , the crime is increasing exponentially,” says Supervisor Special Agent Lee McLoy from FBI San Antonio. McLoy says trust based investment scams represented the biggest portion of losses for investment in 2022. “We get 10 to 50 calls a week reporting the same thing, I was told to transfer money , and I didn’t entirely know what was going on how do I get my money back,” says McLoy. We also discovered in the FBI’s 2022 Elder Fraud Report, there were more than 88,000 victims over 60, that’s an 84% increase in losses from 2021, and more than 5,000 victims lost more than $100,000. Special Agent McLoy says many times victims don’t report these crimes because, “a lot of times often times through embarrassment or confusion don’t file a complaint and don’t report it,” says McLoy. The very reason the Shockey’s are now sharing their story over a year later.
