Dallas Cothrum: Long time Texas Rangers fans remember when the team was a perpetual underdog. This World Series win was a long time coming. There’s plenty of...
A turnpike fan savors the moment and the memoriesBeing new to the role of contributing columnist for my hometown newspaper, I was excited when the publisher invited me to attend a function this week. I was prepared to shave and suit up.Even as a rookie, I know that declining at the last moment is not a good idea. But I simply could not miss the chance to see the Texas Rangers get their first World Series win in person, so canceling on the boss to attend Game 5 was necessary.
I loved them when I was a child, not fully understanding how not-big-league the Rangers were. For goodness sake, one of the team’s early owners,, manufactured plastic pipe, while the Yankees’ owner, George Steinbrenner, was a shipping magnate. Even a child understands that’s not a fair fight. From their inception, the Rangers have made fandom a lot of work. Arlington seemed a long way away—about as far as a world championship.
Our seats were on the same row as Vandergriff and Tarrant County Judge Howard Green, who had served as commissioner of the Texas leagues. The distraction of lots of political talk and the making of a metroplex broke up many a beating on the field. I cried when Arlington Stadium closed but grew to love the Ballpark. It was a real big-league park and it didn’t smell like a restroom. I had the good fortune to see a perfect game tossed by Kenny Rogers there, and the first postseason and later World Series games in that stadium.
