ARLINGTON — Scrambling for relief arms after being worked over on consecutive days by the discerning Dodgers’ lineup, the Rangers recalled top pitching...

Counting that scoreless inning, he’s not allowed a run in 10 innings in July. He has, however, allowed five walks. They are often relying on young, unproven relievers in tight, game-deciding situations.

And young relievers can be inconsistent with command. That leads to walks and mistakes, which often can become homers. From the time the Rangers handed the ball to Speas for the seventh on Friday night until asking Miller to make his MLB pitching debut, the Rangers used five relievers who had a total of 38 MLB relief outings between them. That quintet combined to allow seven walks and two homers in seven innings to the team that is second in the majors in walks and third in OBP.

For the year, walks have not been a huge issue for the bullpen. They have the fourth-lowest walk rate among MLB bullpens. The number is skewed a bit because of the strong command of back-end relievers Homers have been a much bigger deal. The Rangers’ relievers are allowing 1.15 homers per nine innings, seventh highest in the majors. That all compounds into too often not being able to hand a lead off to the Smith-Chapman combo. Of the 18 teams that began Sunday with winning records, the Rangers had lost more games when taking a lead to the seventh than anybody else.
