That quintet combined to allow seven walks and two homers in seven innings to the team that is second in the majors in walks and third in OBP.
For the year, walks have not been a huge issue for the bullpen. They have the fourth-lowest walk rate among MLB bullpens. The number is skewed a bit because of the strong command of back-end relievers Homers have been a much bigger deal. The Rangers’ relievers are allowing 1.15 homers per nine innings, seventh highest in the majors.That all compounds into too often not being able to hand a lead off to the Smith-Chapman combo. Of the 18 teams that began Sunday with winning records, the Rangers had lost more games when taking a lead to the seventh than anybody else.
