Burger will wear the number 21 with the Rangers this season.Burger chose the number in honor of his daughter, Penelope, who was born with Down syndrome.Down syndrome, which is also known as trisomy 21, is caused by an error in the cell division that results in an extra copy of chromosome 21.Penelope is expected to undergo heart surgery later this year.Jake and his wife, Ashlyn, are in the process of starting a foundation for Down syndrome, according to the Rangers .
Burger previously wore the number 30 for the Chicago White Sox and 36 for the Miami Marlins.The infielder was traded to the Rangers from the Marlins this offseason."For me, this is the first time I can pick a number that’s not just close to my heart, but close to a lot of people’s hearts. And for me, it’s trying to spread awareness and try to get the word out about Down syndrome and how people can get support.
