AUSTIN — Early last week, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian sat down with Quinn Ewers for an honest chat. Not to chastise the 19-year-old quarterback for what happened in Stillwater, Okla., on Oct. 22, but to let him know that bad days hit everyone, even wunderkinds with supernatural arm talent.
Sarkisian blossomed from junior college star to All-American quarterback at BYU , but his first year of Division I ball included a few rickety outings. In the penultimate game of BYU’s 1995 season, Sarkisian threw four interceptions and took three sacks in a 34-17 loss to Utah. One week later, he threw for 399 yards and three touchdowns to beat Fresno State and help the Cougars claim a share of the Western Athletic Conference title.
Just this past summer, the quarterback and his trademark blonde mullet fronted a Wranglers marketing campaign, the latest in a string of name, image and likeness deals that began in 2021 with a million-dollar contract from a sports memorabilia company. That was all before he even won the starting job at Texas.
