Texans themselves, including celebrities like Matthew McConaughey and Beyoncé, are divided on how to say the name of their home state., which analyzed pronunciations in celebration of Texas History Month.
McConaughey throws down a "tek-saz" for his beloved Longhorns, while Queen Bey opts for a more traditional "tek-sas" in her pre-release buzz for the country album "Cowboy Carter."suggests McConaughey might be onto something, with nearly a quarter of Texans siding with his "tek-saz" pronunciation. This aligns with the iconic Texan twang. But here's the twist: nationwide, only about 5% favor the "z" sound.
Interestingly, most Americans agree with Beyoncé's "tek-sas." However, this hasn't stopped the debate from igniting online. Google Trends show an 88% surge in searches for "how to say Texas" since late 2023. Preply throws another curveball – most of us might be wrong! According to Head of Methodology Sylvia Johnson, the formal pronunciation stretches the second syllable to sound like "tek-suhs."
Dialects, of course, muddle the waters. The Southern "tek-saz" is more common in Texas, while the Northeast's non-rhotic accent favors "tek-sas." Europeans might even throw in a "tek-sis" for good measure.
