“The reason Donald Trump lost the election in 2020 is he failed to grow the GOP brand,” Hurd said. “Donald Trump is not running for president to make America great again. ... Donald Trump is running to stay out of prison.”
PUBLISHED 12:51 PM CDT Jul. 29, 2023DES MOINES, Iowa — Republican presidential candidate and former Texas congressman Will Hurd made waves at the Lincoln Day Dinner in Iowa by referring to former president Donald J. Trump’s legal issues, as the major players in the 2024 GOP presidential race gathered to make their case for president.
Trump attended the event in person, which is a rarity. The former president frequently avoids attending multi-candidate events in person, questioning why he would share a stage with competitors who are badly trailing him in polls. Still, with Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucus less than six months away, Trump joined a dozen other GOP hopefuls in speaking to about 1,200 GOP members and activists.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was also in attendance, repeating his frequent promise to halt the “weaponization” of the Justice Department, an allusion to Trump’s legal troubles. But he offered no specific thoughts on the cases against him — even though Trump is also bracing to be charged soon in Washington over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
