Texas LGBTQ advocacy groups slammed the GOP politicians for what they said were discriminatory statements about Algerian boxer Imane Khelif.
Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick have joined a chorus of Republicans taking aim at an Algerian boxer over her gender and ability to compete in the Olympic s, even as the committee overseeing the Games says there’s no basis for those types of attacks. The controversy arose after Italian competitor, Angela Carini , withdrew from a match with Algerian boxer Imane Khelif after just 46 seconds.

Algerian boxer facing gender outcry had modest success before Olympics “NO MEN IN WOMEN’S SPORTS!!!” Abbott wrote on social media on Thursday about the match. “That is the law in Texas. It should be the standard everywhere.” Khelif reached the final of the 2023 world championships before she was abruptly disqualified by the International Boxing Association for failing a gender eligibility test.
Vitriol about female boxer fuels concern of backlash against LGBTQ+ and women athletes None of those politicians responded to questions about why they equated the Texas law to Khelif, who the Olympic Committee has said was born female, or whether they want to expand the law to cover conditions affecting sex or gender. Transgender college sports ban passes key vote in Texas House Texas’ SB 15 requires collegiate athletes to compete based on the sex marked on their official birth certificate at or near the time of their birth. House Bill 25, which passed in 2021, requires the same of K-12 student athletes. Texas lawmakers also passed a bill last year banning transgender minors from accessing gender-affirming care, such as puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgeries.
