Report shows Texas ranks at No. 1 for greatest burden score, shows that caregivers for...

To determine the scores, Seniorly rated all 50 states and Washington, D.C. based on six metrics related to dementia from the Alzheimer’s Association and the CDC to develop a “burden score” to represent the combined data.

The metrics included: cognitive decline, doctor’s visits, mortality rates, daily support needs, expected population growth and cost burden. Despite having one of the youngest populations in the country with just 13.2 percent of Texans over the age of 65, Texas has a higher mortality rate. This could be due to a combination of factors such as: the number of medically underserved regions, lack of public spending to support dementia patients and their families and an unhealthier population overall.Which states had the worst scores?

The remaining four states in the top of the list were all southern states with the greatest burden scores for dementia: Alabama ranked No. 2; Louisiana ranked No. 3; Kentucky ranked No. 4; and Mississippi ranked No. 5.Kentucky also has poor numbers, with just 1 in 3 older adults with cognitive decline discussing it with their doctor.Washington, D.C. ranked last on the list with the smallest burden score in the country.Other states with lower overall dementia burden scores were: Washington at No.
