However indirectly, TMX grew out of the Houston radio scene’s profound mediocrity. Growing up in Memorial, Reilly found himself frustrated with its lack of variety, even though the ‘80s were arguably as good as it’s ever been . It certainly hasn’t gotten any better.
KUTX, the music-only twin to the capital’s long-running public-radio flagship KUT, is everything commercial Houston radio is not: curious, carefully curated, intensely community-focused. For a few years now, it has hosted an all-Austin-artist stream on one of its HD channels; that station plays over the PA at the Austin airport, greeting travelers to the Live Music Capital of the world with a dose of one if its primary exports.
“That was my sort of marching order to her,” says Reilly. “Let’s say this is playing in a restaurant and a family of four comes in and sits down and this is playing and they hear it: in a four-song set, both parents, both kids; if you have grandma with you, grandpa, they're going to hear something too. [We’re] trying to hit everybody and just trying to keep it as diverse, stylistically, as we can.
